Our client wanted to transform their front yard into a clean, updated space that provided a sense of calm while complementing the home's architecture.
Project goals
- Create a tranquil, welcoming environment despite the property's high visibility on a busy city street.
- Establish a clear separation between the pedestrian sidewalk and private yard areas.
- Introduce visual interest and a sense of permanence with masonry and water features.
- Balance hardscape with soft, colourful, and textural plantings for year-round appeal.
Our approach
Masonry retaining wall and iron fence. We built a wall right on the sidewalk to elevate the grade and define a private space. Paired with a decorative iron fence, this creates a clear buffer from the busy streetscape of Neil Avenue.
Decorative stone fountain. We installed a custom fountain to provide visual interest and the calming sound of water, carefully adjusting splash levels to ensure a soothing effect. The stone choice and detailing convey order while softening edges to reflect the playfulness of the home's fish-scale shingles.
Planting design. We introduced an eclectic mix of plants with soft textures, seasonal colour, and multi-season interest to contrast the formal stone elements and soften the overall appearance.
The results
The front yard now serves as both a welcoming entrance and a serene buffer from the busy street. Hardscape and water features convey a sense of permanence, while the diverse plantings provide softness, colour, and texture throughout the year. The project transforms a high-visibility city lot into a peaceful, inviting front-yard retreat.
